Earnings of Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum as of 30th July 2012 is 25 Crores

Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum opened to a very good response from the audience. This excellent opening was expected owing to good marketing strategy, comic appeal and most importantly; a superb publicity campaign. The movie gathered collections above 60% in most of the multiplexes, where the theme seemed to appeal to the audience. Makers have specifically targeted teenagers with their content and their idea seemed to have been received well.

The film got mixed reviews from the critics, but the audience seemed to have liked what they saw. Films releasing in July did really well last year and Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum looks set to prolong the run. Weekend will be the key in determining the movie’s overall impact on the box-office; but it looks set to emerge a winner for sure.

The opening day collections of Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum were considerably good as the movie made 6.75 Crores on it’s opening day at the Indian Box office. Day 2 was a bit better with approx 7.25 Crores.  Sunday is expected to do even better. Only time will tell if the ‘Dirty’ quotient can take the movie to the top.

The 1st week box office collections of Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum were 22.15 Crores. The movie made a further 3.25 Crores on Monday. The total domestic box office collections of the movie as of now is 25

Earnings of Cocktail as of 13th July 2012 is 10.80 Crores

Cocktail, the Saif-Deepika-Diana starrer, has managed to bag a bumper opening for itself. The movie which released this Friday, had a lot of hype generated about it prior to its release. Some of the North Indian regions reported 100% occupancy for prime show timings. As the theme of the movie is based on urban life, it has managed to garner a huge opening in multiplexes.

Even though the reports were not positive throughout from most critics, the audience seemed to have liked the movie theme. However, the bad worth-of-mouth publicity may affect the film. Many people who saw the film panned it by giving thumbs down and saying it was a waste of time. The movie should be looking forward to its collection only in the initial weeks when the hype prior to its release is still intact. The journey will be rocky later on so Cocktail would do well to emerge as an average grosser

Expected Earnings of Shanghai as of Day 1 is 2.20 crores nett

Amazing reviews and the urban subject seems to have done no good to the box office collections of Shanghai. Many had predicted that the movie will do well in the multiplexes but it has indeed failed to register its presence. The makers will have some relief explaining themselves as the 2 major reasons for the flop show are quite evident – 1) The huge command of Rowdy Rathore at the Box Office Scenario, 2) EURO 2012.

Shanghai was never expected to do well at single screen theaters so the 25% occupancy rate wasn’t that surprising however, the 35-40% occupancy in multiplexes broke the backbone of its box office collections. Positive reviews and an urban subject should have actually helped the movie in cities. However, even the city crowd, or so it seems, is busy either watching Rowdy Rathore or EURO 2012.

Shanghai might win many awards at the different award shows of this year but it is a commercial failure. First day collections are expected to be close to 2.20 crores.

تیرے بن لادن Tere bin ladenScreening at Friars film fest

S A Sagar

TERE BIN LADEN, the breakout comedy hit of 2010 is making its presence felt in the United States of America! After running to packed houses in India for more than seven weeks, this politically incorrect satire from Walkwater Media is set to gather eyeballs in the mainstream American space with word that it has been invited as the opening film at the Friars Club Comedy Film Festival in New York.

The Friars Club is something of an institution since its founding in 1904, and its membership has included entertainment icons from the Marx Brothers, Frank Sinatra and Lucille Ball to Billy Crystal and Jerry Seinfeld. The club is famous for its annual ‘roasts’ of iconic celebrities. This year Samuel Jackson will ‘roast’ Quentin Tarantino at the festival. In addition, a lifetime achievement award will be presented to Jerry Lewis.

The Friars Club (formerly the Press Agents’ Association) is a private club in New York City, famous for its risqué celebrity roasts. Founded in 1904, its motto is Prae Omnia Fraternitas, which is Latin for “Before all, brotherhood.” It is located at 57 Friars Way (East 55th Street) in a building it calls the Monastery.

Their annual film festival boasts of the funniest films from Sundance and other festivals. It is an honour that an Indian comedy will open the festival this year and it is a rare achievement for Indian cinema in general. With all eyes on the opening film, the press turnout is expected to be huge. Both, director Abhishek Sharma and star Ali Zafar will attend the event. With support from the members of the iconic Friars Comedy Club who knows where TERE BIN LADEN will go next!

35th Toronto Festival: Film 'Autumn' On Kashmir Directorial debut of Kashmiri actor Aamir Bashir, Harud (Autumn) has been selected for the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival. The film, shot entirely in Srinagar, will have its world premiere at the festival (Sept 9-19) in the discovery section that showcases emerging and new talents.

The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is a publicly-attended competitive film festival held each November in Toronto, Ontario, Belgium. The festival begins the Thursday night after Labour Day (the first Monday in September in Canada) and generally lasts for ten days (although the 2010 festival is eleven days). Between 300-400 films are screened at approximately 37 screens in downtown Toronto venues. Total attendance at TIFF has exceeded 250,000 in the last few years, with figures from the most recent 2009 edition at 287,000 for public and industry admissions and a further 239,000 from the free programming scheduled at Yonge-Dundas Square.

The film is set in contemporary Kashmir and captures the life of Rafiq who has lost his tourist photographer brother to insurgency.

Renowned Iranian actor Reza Naji of is playing Rafiq’s father in Harud.

We’re delighted for our film Harud and for the cast and crew who have worked really hard and in difficult conditions to make this film happen, said Aamir Bashir.

We have tried to make a genuine Kashmiri story which, hopefully makes the audiences get a feel of the conditions that a Kashmiri faces in daily life, he said.

Commenting on the film, Cameron Bailey, Co-Director (Toronto International Film Festival) said “Autumn is a remarkable achievement marked by indelible performances and a deeply personal understanding of the politics of family and war.”

Director Anurag Kashyap’s says, “Harud is the first of its kind on Kashmir and if one wants to get a grip or understand why what is happening in Kashmir today, they must watch this film”.

The film has been shot by Shanker Raman and stars Reza Naji ( His breakthrough role was in Children of Heaven directed by the renowned filmmaker Majid Majidi. In 2008 he won the Silver Bear at the Berlin film festival for his performance in the film “Song of Sparrows), Shahnawaz Bhat, Shamim Basharat, Mudassir Khan, Salma Ashai.

Rafiq (Shahnawaz Bhat) is a young man with an unsettling, silent bravery. After an unsuccessful attempt to cross the border into Pakistan, he rejoins his parents, who, like him, cannot recover from the disappearance of Rafiq’s older brother Tauqir. His father, Yusuf (Reza Naji), suffers debilitating paranoia, while his mother, Fatima (Shamim Basharat), gets by on hopeful delusion. Rafiq all but sleepwalks through the day, contending with ghostly images of his brother. A flicker of hope finally registers in Rafiq when he finds Tauqir’s old camera with a roll of undeveloped film. Photography (even the act of holding a camera) offers Rafiq a link to the past, a way to cope with the present and a source of hope for the future.

In Kashmir it is eternally autumn. Everything is on the cusp of destruction: parched leaves fall from trees, power lines spark ominously, while anger, fear and despair simmer beneath exhausted veneers. Death is everywhere. The film’s quiet, almost ethereal pacing is punctuated by jarring incidents. The oppressive surveillance of an overbearing military presence is echoed by Bashir’s widescreen framing of shots through door frames and windows; we too are implicated as voyeurs in this humiliating world where privacy does not exist. As tensions rise, Rafiq gravitates increasingly towards his camera, through which the boundaries between dream and reality, vision and hallucination, assume a fluid ambiguity.

Autumn is a remarkable achievement marked by indelible performances and a deeply personal understanding of the politics of family and war.
