Grenade attacks on law enforcers wound six in Karachi

KARACHI: At least six persons, including two Rangers personnel, were wounded in grenade attacks in Karachi’s Nazimabad area on Wednesday whereas five other persons were killed in different incidents of violence in the city, DawnNews reported.

A Rangers checkpost and a police mobile van were targeted in two separate hand-grenade attacks in Nazimabad area of Karachi.

Rescue and emergency teams reached the site of attack and shifted the victims to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Rescue sources said that six people, including two Rangers personnel, had sustained injuries in the grenade attacks.

Heavy contingents of Rangers and police also reached the blast sites and cordoned off the areas as a probe into the attacks went underway.

Moreover, Rangers personnel conducted an operation in Shah Latif town, a residential area in the outskirts of the city early on Wednesday.

At least a thousand personnel of Sindh Rangers participated in the operation.

Rangers personnel claimed to have arrested six persons, including two activists of a proscribed militant organisation, during the operation. Moreover the raiding security personnel also claimed to have recovered weapons from the arrested suspects.

The ongoing operation in Karachi was launched on Sept 5 2013, after the federal government empowered the Rangers to lead the operation with support of police against criminals in the city following the apex court’s order during the hearing over the city’s worsening law and order situation.

Earlier on Tuesday, Sindh police had claimed the arrest of 258 of suspects whereas Sindh Rangers claimed the arrest of another 40 suspects during targeted action part of the ongoing operation in the city.

One person was killed in a gun-firing incident in Sachal Goth area of Karachi whereas another was killed in a separate incident near Liaquatabad Supermarket area.

Moreover, three persons were killed in separate incidents of violence in Old Haji Camp area, Qaimkhani Colony in Karachi’s Baldia Town and near Ghani Chowrangi in Site area.
