Book review: ‘Grave failure’ that led to countless deaths

David Watts reviews a harrowing new book by Frances Harrison, which, through the eyes of survivors, recalls the war in Sri Lanka against the Tamil minority.

Harrison’s book tells how Sri Lanka’s Tamils were cruelly attacked by their own government as the world looked the other way

Getting to the reality of modern conflict is becoming ever more difficult as governments expend enormous efforts to prevent journalists getting to see things at first hand or even target them for killing to prevent them doing so.

One of those most difficult to report, and which has been ever since its horrendously brutal conclusion, was the war in Sri Lanka against the Tamil minority. A journalist who suffered badly in the course of bringing its reality to the outside world was Marie Colvin, who was subsequently killed by the regime of Bashar al-Assad as she tried to carry out the same vital responsibility in Syria.
